Prairie Land Food: Do Good, Eat Cheap

Food gets expensive. As a college student, that's doubly true. Do you wish there was a way to buy more affordable food? You can, with Prairie Land Food, a nonprofit that sells quality discounted food to do-gooders.

Food packs usually include a variety of meat, veggies, and fruit. This month, they even included corn nuggets (a delicacy in our apartment)! There are sometimes specials, such as frozen fish. Generally, a Prairie Pak (meats, fruits, and veggies) will cost about $28. You can order as many packs as you can afford.

According to my husband's friend, who buys from Prairie Land, the food is "of decent quality", at an "extremely affordable" price. "Sometimes there were amazing deals on name brand stuff room like Schwan's for a fraction of the price", she added.

Did you mow your neighbor's lawn? Or how about some random acts of kindness? Guess what? You're eligible! All it takes to qualify is to do something good for someone. These acts can range from chatting up a lonely neighbor to carpooling. The whole system relies on the honor system.

Prairie Land Food started in September of 2006 and is ran by June Glasgow. It serves many Kansas and Nebraska communities.
